Pop Rock Alt Pop
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
member since: Jul 17, 2008
Unusual, unique and unpredictable. Dirty Penny surprises and demands your attention with each track. This 5-member alt-rock band from Toronto has little patience for the same old same old, both in studio and on stage. Apart from the influences of band favorites Pixies, the Velvet Underground, Bauhaus and Tom Waits, Dirty Penny draws on old-fashioned story-telling to pull their listeners in. Lyricist and singer Jason weaving surprise and humor over the harmonic lines of the band, creating original musical tales that make everything else you've heard lately sound trite.
DP's debut CD "Tada!" was released early 2007 (available in good music stores in Toronto, on iTunes and on other popular digital music services). Here's what the critics are saying ...
"If Cake ever teamed up with Ween, Toronto's Dirty Penny would need to search for a new sound. The band combines Cake's rock raps with Ween's eccentric lyrics, creating a curious record that's completely obnoxious but fascinating at the same time." Now Magazine
"Another agreeable aspect of Tada! consists of its charming references to childhood. Whether it's the ode to the glory that is poutine ("La Poutine"), recalling the story of Noah's ark ("Noah") or singing about juice ("Bubblejuice"), the album comes across as a call to start acting as a child again." Earshot
DP is currently in the process of revealing their lastest full-length "Sage Against the Machine".
